comScore Releases Peruvian Web Usage Report
A few weeks ago, comScore released their first ever study on internet usage in Peru. comScore, a global leader in measuring all aspects of the digital world, greatly expanded their coverage of the Latin American market with this report.
The comScore study looked at all Peruvian internet users over the age of 15, throughout the month of April 2011. The study measured all internet usage from home and work locations, but excluded public computers, mobile phones, and PDAs. The findings are remarkably similar to those of comScore’s recent reports on web usage in the United States and Canada.
The top three destinations for internet users in Peru were Google sites, Microsoft sites, and, you guessed it, Facebook. Google was visited by a whopping 97% of users—nearly 3.9 million people. Microsoft sites had the highest level of engagement with visitors, who spent an average of 8.4 hours on these sites over the course of the month.
The comScore study also showed that portals accounted for the highest percentage of time spent online, taking up just under 33% of all web time. Social networking and instant messaging were tied for second, at 19.2%, further showing the influence of Facebook and sites like Twitter.
The findings of the comScore study help reinforce Ecreativeworks’ basic school of thought on SEO: high search engine rankings should be your main goal, but a strong social media presence is becoming an increasingly important piece of the puzzle.
comScore hasn’t yet released web usage reports for every country in the world, but I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that they’re working on them. For now, one can fairly safely assume that internet use is basically the same all around the world. After all, if Canada and Peru—two seemingly very different nations—have such similar online habits, there’s likely not much fluctuation in the top three or four sites from country to country worldwide.
